Gepuk Guys Brings Smashed Ayam Berempah to Jofa Coffeeshop in Bedok North

Gepuk Guys is open at the new 24-hour Jofa Coffeeshop at 531 Bedok North Street 3, #01-680. It is MasterChef Singapore season two winner Derek Cheong's smash-fried chicken stall, a spin-off of Berempah Bros, which started at Beauty World Food Centre in January 2026. The Bedok stall is the East-side place to try ayam gepuk without crossing to Johor, and it is still new enough in September that the sides have not gone slack.

What ayam gepuk actually is at this stall

Malaysian FoodTok made ayam gepuk, smashed fried chicken, a default supper order. Singapore already had Papa Ayam and Ayam Gepok Anakmak. Cheong's version uses the same berempah marinade as Berempah Bros. Proteins are fried, then smashed and finished with kicap manis instead of the fried breadcrumb-garlic topping used at the original brand. That sweet soy is the difference you taste first.

The menu splits into a gepuk series and a lemak series. Gepuk plates come with coconut rice, achar, fried egg, gajus cashew butter, bayam goreng, mushroom berempah, and the house gepuk sambal. Lemak plates keep coconut rice, egg, achar, and a sweeter nasi lemak chilli with shallot and anchovy. You can swap rice for Indomie at S$1.50 extra. HungryGoWhere reviewer Gary Lim did that on the duck and it reads like a late supper, not a lunch set.

The stall uses no pork and no lard and works with halal suppliers. MUIS certification was reported as in progress at the time of the August review. Ask before you assume the certificate is on the wall.

Order the chicken, then spend on the sides

Signature ayam berempah gepuk is S$9.90. The coating is thin and spiced, the chicken is leg meat, and the coconut rice is the part Lim compared to better nasi lemak in town. Gajus is the Malaysian-style cashew butter that cuts the chilli. Bayam goreng, also S$3 a la carte, eats like seasoned roasted seaweed more than a vegetable. Mushroom berempah is S$3.50 a la carte. It sold out by 1pm on Lim's Friday visit, so go before noon if that is the side you came for. Begedil is S$1.50, freshly fried, with white pepper, nutmeg, and coriander in the mash.

Duck confit berempah gepuk is S$16.50. Cheong has posted the method: overnight marinade, four-hour sous vide, then a quick fry in berempah batter. That is coffeeshop pricing with hotel technique, and the flesh should come off the bone. Grilled squid nasi lemak is S$8.50 if you want something not fried. Otah berempah is S$2 as an add-on, custardy inside with galangal and lemongrass. Those four extras are why this stall is not just another fried-chicken queue.

The coffeeshop around it, and the wait

Jofa Coffeeshop also has Old Street Scissors Cut Curry Rice, Eat Bar, and Jofa Mee Pok. That matters if the gepuk plate feels too fried after a few bites. You can pull a non-fried side from the next stall. Two staff run Gepuk Guys on a typical weekday. Lim waited just over 10 minutes at 1pm on a Friday, and under 10 minutes at 11.40am the next day. Peak dinner in a new 24-hour coffeeshop will be slower. Walk-ins only. No reservations.

Bedok Reservoir MRT Exit A is about a 12-minute walk. Bedok North is not a tourist loop. You come here because you live east of the PIE or you already wanted Derek's berempah after Beauty World. Hours listed on HungryGoWhere are 10.30am to 9.30pm daily, even though the coffeeshop itself runs 24 hours. Do not show up at midnight expecting the stall to be open.

Cheong opened six Berempah Bros outlets in seven months, plus this stall. Fast expansion is the risk. For now the Bedok plate still has the sides that the Beauty World original does not. That is the reason to go in September, before the mushroom berempah becomes a sometimes item.
