East Coast Lagoon is open after the wash. Haze still emptied the tables.

East Coast Lagoon Food Village is open again. NEA closed Singapore's only beachfront hawker from 12 to 14 October 2026 for the quarterly wash. 8world and AsiaOne both carried the dates. Thursday 15 October was the first service back. The harder story is the empty tables, not the three dark days.

Empty round tables and shuttered BBQ stalls at East Coast Lagoon Food Village

Zaobao on 13 October, quoting Shin Min, spoke to Cai Zhengyu at 阿宇炒福建面 while the centre was shut. He said dine-in at the Lagoon had dropped about 50 percent in the haze month. East Coast is a running and cycling park. When the air sits unhealthy, people stay off the path, then they stay off the satay. He was throwing away a pack or two of noodles and prawns a day, and had cut orders in half. Grab pickup rose about 10 percent. Regulars who still came asked for takeaway.

That matches what 8world filmed at the Lagoon in June, when sudden rain emptied the open seats. Wu Yanlong, who fries oyster omelette, said a 4pm downpour ends the dinner service. The covered pavilion holds a fraction of the tables. The rest is sky. You cannot roof the sea breeze without killing the reason people sit here.

The wash is done. The stalls were already turning over.

Shin Min walked the village in June. About 10 stalls in recent years had opened and left. Zaidi Uttu at Musa Ikan Bakar, a hawker representative, said custom had fallen 20 to 30 percent a year. A mala hotpot stall lasted two or three days. A Turkish stall next to Choon Hiang fried noodles, 48 years in, packed up in early June and left the unit empty. Most of the 60-odd stalls still fire for dinner, not lunch. Midday is a few woks and a lot of steel tabletops.

Hawkers named three structural reasons, none of them haze. Bus 401 is the nearest service and runs weekends and public holidays only. From Siglap MRT it is still a hot 10-minute walk across the Parkway. Car parks nearest the village now charge at the gantry. Public drinking after 10.30pm in common areas pushed the late beer-and-stingray crowd home. 245 Beer Place told Shin Min the old overnight parking days are gone. People peel off around 10pm.

What else in the East shuts before year end

If you are planning a hawker breakfast after 16 October, the remaining Q4 closes in the East are the ones that still matter. East Coast Town Council publishes the Bedok list. Blk 216 Bedok North Street 1, 16 to 20 November. The Marketplace @ 58, 30 November to 4 December. Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre at 208B New Upper Changi Road, 7 to 11 December. Pasar 16 at Bedok South, 14 to 18 December. 85 Fengshan Centre, 28 to 29 December.

NEA-owned centres have their own quarterly wash. Lookup and HawkerAtlas, both reading the data.gov.sg closure file, list Haig Road Blocks 13 and 14 from 30 November to 3 December, split across the two blocks. Geylang Serai Market and Tampines Round Market both sit on 14 to 16 December. Changi Village's 15-day R&R ended 15 October. That reopen is a separate piece.

NParks still has works in the park around the hawker. A footpath in Area D is closed 5 October to 30 November. The Area C1 dog run is closed until 6 November. Toilet E1 upgrading runs to 31 October. Land surveys for Long Island sit on the park into Q1 2027. None of that closes the Lagoon. It does change how you walk in from the bike path.

Go after 4pm if you want satay smoke. Check PSI if you wanted to sit outdoors. If the air is ugly, order in or pick an indoor East hawker instead of pretending the lagoon is the same on a haze weekday.
