Spartan but functional informal layout, rather noisy during our visit (like a typical HK "cha-chaan-teng"), even though place was not fully filled. Self service in ordering food and food collection, though staff present to offer …

If you’re looking for a no-fuss, quick Hong Kong-style fix in the Katong area, So Good Char Chan Teng at i12 Katong fits the bill—provided you aren’t looking for a traditional "waiter-service" cafe experience. The Atmosphere & Service Visiting around 8:30 PM, the restaurant was surprisingly quiet and nearly empty, which made for a peaceful (if slightly sterile) meal. The process here is highly automated: you place your order at the self-service kiosks located right at the entrance. The overall vibe leans heavily into functional territory. Between the kiosk ordering and the self-collection system (where you grab your tray once the buzzer goes off), the experience feels more like eating at a premium food court rather than a sit-down restaurant. It’s efficient, but don’t expect much in the way of table service or "cha chaan teng" bustle. The Food The menu offers the standard HK staples, and while the quality is decent, there’s room for improvement. • Congee: This was the highlight of the meal. The texture was impressively smooth and silky, exactly how a good Cantonese congee should be. • Fried Beef Hor Fun: This was a bit of a letdown. While the beef was tender enough, the dish lacked "wok hei"—that essential charred, smoky breath of the wok that defines a great stir-fry. It tasted fine, but felt a little "tame" compared to more authentic spots. Summary So Good Char Chan Teng is a reliable, "okay" option for a quick, solitary dinner or a fast family meal when the mall is quiet. It’s clean and efficient, but it lacks the soul and heat of a traditional Hong Kong teahouse.
